Luna's
Britta Phillips and
Dean Wareham connect with
Sonic Boom and legendary producer
Tony Visconti (
David Bowie,
the Stranglers,
T. Rex) for the
Sonic Souvenirs EP.
Phillips and
Wareham revise these five particular tracks, which were originally featured on the duo's solo album,
L'Avventura, and the modification couldn't be more perfect.
Sonic Boom emphasizes
Phillips' talent as a singer, for she's a vocal temptress with a sexy, delicate presentation. Adding gentle electronic beats and glossy rhythms fleshes out the dreamscape of each song. From
Phillips' sweet coos and purrs on "Your Baby (Can't Stand the Rain)" to the haunting whispers of "Knives from Bavaria (Spoonful of Fun),"
Sonic Souvenirs showcases
Phillips and
Wareham in a deeper, creative space. There's much more life to their work outside of
Luna, and that's not to slag off what
Luna's previously done. Together,
Phillips and
Wareham have a special dynamic, and the
Sonic Souvenirs EP is their experiment in seeing what they can do outside of
Luna's intricate styles. It's seductive, and the two want to seduce the listener as well as one another.
Visconti's magic on the sparkling "Ginger Snaps (And Sugar Winks)" makes that quite clear.
