Album Review

DJ Micro specializes in big beat trance, and though Music Through Me may be less of a head trip than the work of John Digweed, Zenith: Nadir, or Paul Oakenfold, Micro's mix of acid breakbeats and artists like Tall Paul, Deepsky, and Joshua Ryan certainly captures the physicality of rave. Tall Paul's "Precious Heart" samples INXS with extremely catchy results. It's almost melancholy to hear Michael Hutchence's voice dislocated from its original context, as if it is just floating through the cosmos. But this is the most sublime moment on a record that more often relies on a formula of relentless beats juxtaposed with peaceful breaks to achieve momentum. Still, there is no way a dancefloor could possibly not move when propelled by the chunky beats and high energy of Music Through Me. Trance elements form the foundation of this mix CD, but it is music for the body, not the mind.
