Album Review

For the few persons out there still unaware that rap music is an overground force and steadily growing faster than the rock industry, the album version of the television extravaganza known as The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards should dispel any ignorance. And given the wide sway of the mega major-label group PolyGram/Universal -- including under its corporate umbrella No Limit, Priority, Def Jam, Interscope, Roc-A-Fella, Payday, Cash Money, and MCA -- it's a lock that this one should include some of the biggest hits of the year. From Jay-Z's "Can I Get A...," Eminem's "My Name Is," Silkk the Shocker's "It Ain't My Fault," and Juvenile's "Ha," to the Roots' "You Got Me," Busta Rhymes' "Party Is Goin' on Over Here" and Method Man's "Break Ups 2 Make Ups," The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards 1999 indeed features many of the most popular hip-hop acts of the year. It's definitely one of the best summations of hip-hop in 1999 brought out yet, though the big artists not included (DMX, Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott) are missed in a big way.
Keith Farley, Rovi
