Carol Leigh, one of the top classic jazz and blues singers since the early 1970s, is heard in prime form during the two sessions included on this CD. The original LP had 11 numbers matching
Leigh with a top-notch sextet including cornetist
Ernie Carson (who works very well with
Leigh), trombonist
Charlie Bornemann, clarinetist
John Otto and pianist
Knocky Parker. Of those selections, such vintage tunes as "Sweet Man," "I'm Down In the Dumps," "There Ain't No Sweet Man That's Worth the Salt of My Tears" and "I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby" are among the highpoints. In addition,
Leigh got together with clarinetist
Bob Helm and pianist
Ray Skjelbred in 1996 and recorded six more numbers for this CD, trio performances that include "Kansas City Man Blues" and "Blame It On the Blues." Highly recommended to fans of classic jazz singing, this CD is one of Carol Leigh's finest.
