Album Review

Masters of big beat, jump-up, and funky breaks throw down solid basslines and funked-up drum loops, mixed with a healthy dose of vocal and 303 samples. This is a collaborative effort between more than a dozen of the biggest names in broken beat and big beat. Featured artists include Überzone and Monkey Mafia. Masters of remixing -- including Fatboy Slim and Wizard of Oh (aka Omar Santana) -- slice and dice original tracks by Keoki and Christopher Just. The result is a stellar collection of distinctive tracks. Each one sounds different from all the others, but the energy level is consistently through the ceiling. It's hard to pick favorites, but Wizard of Oh's remix of "Me" by Keoki is a standout, and the Fatboy Slim remix of "I'm a Disco Dancer" by Christopher Just is a yummy remix of a club favorite. You'll want to turn this CD up loud -- so loud the neighbors complain and the people driving next to you can't help but tap their fingers. Just like in a great club set, you'll welcome the breakdowns but wait impatiently for the beat to kick in again. Unlike a great club set, however, this disk can be put in "repeat" mode and listened to over and over (and over and over) till you get sick of it -- which, for a serious fan of breakbeats, might take a looooong time.
