Album Review

As the title suggests, there are plenty of dueling banjos to be found on Feuding Banjos: Bluegrass Banjo of the Southern Mountains. This pleasant collection of 18 bluegrass melodies plucked, picked, and claw hammered on the banjo features performances by a star-studded cast of musicians. Multi-instrumentalist Eric Weissberg of "Dueling Banjos" fame makes an appearance here, as does "Classical Gas" guitarist Mason Williams, Mike Seeger of the New Lost City Ramblers, respected session musician David Lindley, and "Walk Right In" songwriter Erik Darling. The melodies on this collection range from tunes like "Cripple Creek" or Dick Weissman's spirited rendition of "Old Joe Clark" to lesser-known tunes like the evocative "Saturday Night Banjo." Other than the occasional appearance of a fiddle or harmonica, the majority of this album is dedicated to banjo solos or duets only. This is the perfect complement to a lazy night by the wood stove or a long drive through the Ozarks.
