Nordic Connect is the name of a co-op group whose best known member is the masterful trumpeter Ingrid Jensen but also features her talented sister Christine Jensen on alto and soprano and the versatile keyboardist Maggi Olin. All nine selections are written by one of those three musicians. The music is post-bop, sometimes hinting at early-'70s Miles Davis or Woody Shaw, and at other times sounding quite original. The harmonically rich compositions inspire the musicians to play at their most creative, as does the stimulating support provided by bassist Mattias Welin and drummer Jon Wikan. Whether it is introspective ballads or challenging uptempo romps, this music holds one's interest throughout and is an excellent example of early 21st century jazz. Recommended.
